Less Is More

It all started with plates.... YES plates!

My hubby went back to work after 2 years of unemployment and suddenly along with my part time job I was back to having sole responsibility of keeping up our house. Now, I am a housekeeper, that's what I do for a living, and what is it they say about the cobblers children? That's right! They have no shoes.

After a few weeks of falling seriously behind I hatched a plan. I worked hard on it all day long. When hubby got home from his long day on the farm his first question was "Where are all the plates?"

To which I responded "Well, you really only need one."

That's right! I spent the whole day packing up plates, forks, glasses, anything and everything that we didn't NEED more than one of each. We have no children or regular house guest so really people, we only need one plate each, one bowl each, one fork each and so on and so forth!

Now what was I trying to achieve you might ask? A cleaner house? Less things? Not really, Its not like I want to get rid of all my plates! I love my plates! They are vintage and in all different wild patterns. As a matter of fact it was hard deciding which wonderfully wild plate to keep out for myself. Really I just wanted to foster knew habits. Like washing the wild plate after eating from it. Rather then stacking it on the counter and then another on top and so on until I have no more wonderfully wild plates in the cabinet in which case I am forced to wash them all!

Did it help you might ask? Not exactly. As of yet the only thing I have really accomplished is washing plates right before they are actually used. Which, to be honest is still a step in the right direction. I mean its been several months now and I haven't gone digging through boxes for plates. So at least my kitchen is staying some what cleaner. And hey! we are all a work in progress right?

What is my point with all these wonderfully wild plates? Well these plates got me to thinking. How much would I treasure my wonderfully wild plate if I only had ONE? What if I couldn't just run out to some random mega mart and buy a whole box of plates for 5 bucks(of course they wouldn't be my wonderfully wild vintage plates but that's beside the point:)? How much more would that plate mean to me? How much more appreciative of that plate would I be?

Then I was on a mission. At my next craft show I came across a wonderful artist, he was a young guy making pottery with beautiful modern colors on comfortable designs. So what did I do? I bought myself a ....MUG;) hehe you though I was going to say plate but hey, i have so many wonderful vintage plates to choose from but an incredible handmade piece of art to drink my tea from, now that's what i needed! That's what i needed to help me start caring about my stuff. Things that mean something, things that have heart and love behind them. Maybe even memories(hints the vintage plates).

Where am i going with all this? I think there has been a disconnect, a disconnect between us and the world we are living in. Take that $5.00 box of plates, where does it come from? How was it made? How did it get to me? All I know is it is sitting here before me, the same as all the food on the plate. How did it grow? Where was it grown? How was it harvested? How did it get to me? As Humans if we can't see it we don't tend to care.

When I grow my own broccoli I practically count out how many florets I need for that meal. When it comes in a bag I just dump the whole thing in the pot. This year has been my first year of actually growing enough food to have a whole meal that was completely grown or harvested by my husband or I. Its a very different feeling eating food that you raised with your own two hands, the same as drinking tea from a cup that someone poured their love into and eating said meal from a plate that holds a special memory. There is no disconnect there. Just pure and simple.

To sum this disconnected meandering of words up I would just like to say: It seems we scramble through life always trying to obtain more to fill a void that could simply be a yearning for one wonderful, memory inducing, love filled wild patterned plate! Sometimes Less is more!

Side-note: I have been wanting to blog about my wonderfully wild vintage plates for sometime now. With Thanksgiving coming on strong I have had a lack of thankfulness. Things ,it seems, in these hard times are well, hard. Just at midnight as Thanksgiving rolled in I posted the below comment on my Facebook feed. It was words that had been scrambling to get out for weeks. They just needed to be said. Immediately I thought about my plates and began to write this blog post. It is not meant to tell anyone how to live their lives. It is just an observation, of my life, and a release of words that needed to be put out there, for me.

Below is that Facebook Update:

Today I am thankful for: My body that can do most things I enjoy, my eyes that see the beauty of the earth, my nose that smells the wonderful scent of anything that is worth smelling, my ears that can hear music and laughter and love that I feel deep inside. Sometimes when life gets hard it may seem like we don't have a lot to be thankful for but sometimes.... less is MORE

The journey of a thousand miles...

Before I even knew i was on this journey I was diagnosed from my Chiropractor with Fibromyalgia.

I have had this pain forever and to me it is the norm. My Chiro was worried though and did the pressure point test on me. You have to have 11 of 18 and I had almost every one. So like the wonderful Chiro she is she did some research(as did I) into natural healing techniques for this disease.

Fibromyalgia is basically an inflammation in the body. One way to help with inflammation is eating a low inflammatory diet. So she suggested among other things a gluten free diet. There were many other options but I wanted to choose something that would be doable for me as a life change, not just a fad diet. At her suggestion of giving up all dairy I had to laugh. Unless the pain becomes debilitating I can't see myself doing that. I do however eat all organic dairy products. I am a healthy eater anyway so it really wasn't that hard for me to switch to Gluten Free but it was surprising all the places you will find gluten and not just in your food!

One of my best resources has been Vitacost.com and my Local Trader Joe's. Also my local grocer carries a wide range of GF products and I have also seen them in Wal-Mart.

Summary of the changes I made:

Breakfast: Easy Peasy:) I went from eating yogurt a banana and a whole grain granola bar for breakfast to eating the same thing but GF bar instead. Some mornings I like cereal so I switched to a GF variety. I have also found cream of buckwheat and on the mornings I have time to spend 10 minutes cooking it, I really enjoy it.

Lunch: A little more challenging and this is where I normally have to fudge a little. At first I just ate Chinese a lot since I can get rice a meat and a veggie. Well, apparently almost every sauce they use has wheat in it! I still eat it some but try to limit the saucy variety's I get. I checked online at all my fav fast food joints and was able to find quite a few things here and there that serve GF options. Some things may not be labeled GF but common sense tells you there are a lot of things you can still eat. (Although if you are highly allergic you should stay away from anything that is not actually be labeled GF. Some things like oatmeal are packaged on the same machines that package wheat food so there is cross contamination.) Trader Joe's also has some wonderful frozen items that are GF like tamales and taquitos! My fav bbq joint offers grilled chicken strips which is great and their sauce is GF!:)

Dinner: Basically no change. We switched our noodles to GF noodles and I no longer make rolls. You may be wondering "Isn't there GF bread?" Yes but as an added measure I have also sworn off yeast. As a bread worshiper this is harder for me than the gluten ban! But, I know that yeast is something my body really needs a break from. This part will probably not be permanent. I do want to find more out about the different kinds of yeast and those that are actually healthy for you. I did however find a brand called Chebe through Vitacost and they have mixes for GF breads, crackers, and pizza dough that is both gluten AND yeast free! I have made the pizza dough which even my picky hubby loved and am looking forward to making the onion rolls.

Dessert: BEST GF FIND EVER!! Gluten free brownies! proof God loves me and wants me to be happy:)

Snacks: I found these great nut mixes at my grocer. They are by Majans and are called Bhuja. Its a great spicy mix with crackers and noodles and nuts. All GF! I also snack on dried fruits, nuts and GF crackers I found at Walmart with hummus. Also organic GF corn chips and salsa!

Food I miss the most? I have found that with eating GF your really don't crave much. Its like your body just doesn't need it. Every now and then I do miss a good pb&j:)

In a future post I may just have to post a few GF recipes I have created:)

Results and experiences so far?:

My pain has reduced by 50% I would say, in the several months since I have been eating this way. Also with a little exercise I have lost almost 15 lbs. Which is a BIG deal for me because after I went on birth control when I was 17 I gained 70lbs in 9 months. That weight has NEVER budged no matter how hard I have tried to lose it.

Eating GF does force you to eat healthier and you also spend a lot more time cooking. As most things that are quick are not GF and are also not that great for you.

You may contribute the sudden need to Keep It Simple to the GF diet as I have heard it helps clear the fog from your mind! I would have to say I definitely feel less foggy!:)

Do you have any GF experiences? Questions or comments? Please feel free to comment below and share!

Welcome To My Kiss Journal

KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid

My world is one that most people would consider simple. I work part time as a housekeeper and I create crochet jewelry and sell at craft shows and on Etsy. My hobbies are organic gardening, reading, writing, horseback riding and being outdoors with my dogs. I am married, have no children besides our fur babies and the occasional stray animal. Yet, I constantly find myself overwhelmed. "With what?" you may ask, in a disbelieving voice. "You have no kids or demanding job to exasperate or stress you out!"

That's a very good question and of course the answer would vary depending on the time of day, or week, or month, or what year it is...lol. But life, as we know, no matter who you are or what you do, will deliver stress at your doorstep. For me, ever loudening voices jockeying for my attention in my brain is becoming my personal stress! More and more, I spend so much time trying to decide what to do first that I get nothing done!

Lately, though, it seems one voice has risen above the fray for me to simplify things. I guess I've been a little hard of hearing or slow to act, because in the last few weeks the phrase "Keep it simple stupid" has been coming at me from every possible direction.

So in response, and proof that I've received the message loud and clear, I've decided to document my journey in finding ways to do just that. Hopefully, by doing so, I will not only relay what I have discovered for myself, but hear from others ways they've found to simplify their lives as well.

In looking up the phrase, simplify your life, I came across some great quotes: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler" ~ Albert Einstein. "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" ~ Leonardo Da Vinci. And, "It seems that perfection is reached not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away" ~ Antoine de Saint Exupéry.

I am going to be working in every aspect of my life; spiritual, mental, physical and material. This includes my health, my relationships and my disaster of a house:) My goals are to get healthy, honor myself in my relationships, clean and de-clutter my house, create new habits to keep it clean and organized, learn to be a pack leader to my dogs, and learn more about living sustain-ably - and MUCH more! Is that too complicated? lol

This is going to be a REAL life documentation with NO sugar coating! I am going to be completely honest with myself and with you. Hopefully, in doing so, I will be more empowered to make changes and hopefully inspire others or help others along their journey! I am really excited to hear feedback and get tips from readers!

So thanks for stopping by and coming along with me on my journey. Now lets go learn something together!
